Unveiling of the statue of St. Patrick Cloonfad, 17th March 2002

St. Patrick's Day was indeed the appropriate day for the unveiling of the statue of St. Patrick outside the church in Cloonfad.  Fr. Tommie Cummins performed the ceremony, the blessing of the statue and the reciting of prayers.  The choir was present and a large number of the local people gathered to witness the event.  Fr. Tommie thanked all involved and recounted the experience of locating the statue in west Galway in a derelict state and having it brought to Cloonfad for restoration to its original gloryHe also spoke of the people involved from the carrying of the statue to the restoration itself, painting and installation to its present site.   This was the beginning to a day which was to witness the biggest crowd ever to gather in Cloonfad.

Cloonfad's First Ever St. Patrick's Parade

Peoples first reaction to the first ever St. Patrick's parade in Cloonfad was nothing short of amazement.  The preparation for this event was merely six weeks earlier.  Speaking to Rose Miskell, she declared that the idea was first mentioned in the pub and from there it grew to fruition

There was a marked excitement and enthusiasm in the village especially on the Saturday before the parade when groups of locals came out to clean up the village and erect bunting and flags.

The parade was led by none other than St. Patrick himself and the Cloonfad Utd. Mayor Sean Corcoran.  In all there were forty three groups represented in the parade.   Due to start at 3pm, the organisers did not disappoint.  The show commenced at 3.10pm and rolled down the main street to turn off to the Williamstown road having passed the inspection stand at the cross-roads.

Johnny Moran had the responsibility of giving a running commentary while the judges were Michael McGreal, Councilor, and Mary Beades of the Roscommon GAA ladies team. Who would have thought that such a huge gathering would be seen in Cloonfad?  The rain as constant as it was did not dampen the high spirits of those involved.

Three prizes were awarded to the most imaginative floats.  These went to Tom Shannon for "Anaerobic Digester".  Second prize to "Uncivil Defence"  and the third prize went to "Six on Tour".  The third prize members consisted of Sharon Costello, Tara Harvey, Heather Melia, Paula Jennings, Gerard Fagan and Ian Kelly.

Needless to say the day did not end just at this point.  The community centre was open to the children for some entertainment and the pubs were awash with people.
Rose Miskell and her committee are to be commended for the forethought of having such an event and for having the organisational skills to pull it off.  The people of the community are to be congratulated for their efforts in bringing  about such a fete for without the community good-will it could not have achieved success.  CONGRATULATIONS ALL.

Dangerous building is removed

I'm sure most of you traveling on the Cloonfad to Ballyhaunis road will recognise the  building above situated at Gurrane Ballyhaunis.  It has been the cause and focal point of a number of motor accidents over a number of years.  Great efforts have been made by local residents and the County Council to have it removed.  Not least among the officials involved was  Councilor John Cribbin who informed us that the site would be cleared on Monday, and indeed it was. The image above shows the leveling commence at 10.30 am on Monday last.  By evening the entire building was in rubble and the road widened a little.  The foundations, of what appears to be a replacement, are in place within a few feet from the edge of the road.
