Captain Pat Coye

Captian Pat Coye was one of the volunteers who helped out in the Derryhoyle hideout, during the Black and Tan war. He had many lucky escapes. One night he was gone visiting his neighbours, when the Black and Tans came and raided his house. With the quick action of a member of his family, who ran bare foot across the fields for about half a mile to warn Pat about the Black and Tans. Pat had just left his neighbour's house when the Black and Tans arrived there.

During the Civil War he was shot dead in Brosna, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Kilchreest cemetery. A beautiful monument is to be seen in Kilchreest cemetery. It was erected by his comrades. They had money left over when the monument was erected. It was suggested to the parish priest to put a stained glass window in Clostoken Church but he would not allow it. Instead the stained glass window was erected in the Cathedral in Loughrea on the left hand side of the sanctuary. It is an "Eve Hone" painting and his name is written on it.
