The Hideouts
During the Black and Tan war, there were two hideouts in the parish which were in use during the war. One of the hideouts was situated in Doograne and the other one was in Derryhoyle. The Doograne hideout was in the land owned by the Keogh's and the Derryhoyle hideout was in the land owned by the Coye's. The people on the run from the Black and Tans used to go from one hideout to the other at night.
During the war the Black and Tans used to raid some of the houses in the parish. They used to raid Coye's and Stradford's in Derryhoyle, Keoghs and Tierney's in Doograne, Connaughtons in Clostoken and Penders in Carramore. During one of these raids when each of these houses were raided, Mick Pender was badly beaten. The Black and Tans didn't know there way around the country, so they never travelled by roads or boreens
Some of the local volunteers were having a meeting one night in Tierney's Barn. It so happened that they had no one on guard and before long the barn was surrounded by Black and Tans. A loaded revolver was pushed through a hole in the barn door by one of the Black and Tans. Frank Fallon snapped the loaded revolver out of black and tan's hand. The other members of the meeting escaped out the back way. In all the commotion, one of the Tierney's fell and broke his leg. He was carried by some of the members and they escaped across the fields to the hideouts.
