December 1999
My dear sisters and brothers of Enniscorthy community,
Only one other generation of people lived at the juncture of two Christian millennia,
namely the people of one thousand years ago. There is every evidence that they, too,
were deluded with millennial messages even if we are not sure how well they handled them.
The words currently used to describe our sensory and mental overloads -"wired", "burnt out",
"mental fatigue" - should serve as a warning to us to refocus and to ask the perennial question,
"What's it all about?" It's really all about celebrating the 2000th anniversary of the birth
of Him whom Christians call "the Son of God".
It is good to leave behind a marker for future generations, a description of who we were,
what kind of people lived in these times, what were our interests, our passions, our
preoccupations, what were our thoughts on the millennium, how did we celebrate it, what kind
of community life did we enjoy.
One thousand years from now another generation will pore over these records with great curiosity
attempting to discover more about themselves from the reports we leave behind us of the way
we were. Best wishes to all concerned with this community project.
With every good wish and blessing, I remain,
Yours sincerely,
BRENDAN COMISKEY
