We can help!

The name of St. Mary’s Convent N.S. has long been associated with generosity and willingness to help others but this year has surpassed all expectations.  Almost £2000 has been raised by the pupils for various charitable causes both at home and abroad.  These include Cancer Research,  Turkana Mission,  National Children’s Hospital and Trocaire.  The most recent projects have been for Bóthar and RP Ireland.

Bóthar Project

During the season of Lent, the pupils managed to raise more than £250 to send a goat to an African family as part of a campaign co-ordinated by Bóthar. There was great excitement on Tuesday, March 30th  when “Dexter” (a local goat from Cuskinny) visited the school to witness the handing over of the cheque.  Everyone looks forward to hearing news of our African goat which was named “Dóchas” (meaning Hope) by pupil Carrie Doyle. The latest bulletin on ‘Dóchas’, our goat for Africa, is that she is due to travel before the end of May. We look forward to hearing of her progress in her new village.

  Choirs for Sight

On Thursday, March 25th, the pupils staged a recital of Choral Singing and Verse as part of  an international campaign to raise funds for RP (retinitis pigmentosa) Research to help prevent blindness.  The concert was a huge success with a capacity audience who enjoyed every minute of this unusual event.  Special guests for the evening were the Commodore Choir under conductor John Aherne.  The accompanists were Claire and Aileen Muldowney who gave so generously of their time and talent.  We would like to thank all who helped to raise almost £600 for such a worthy cause. Thank you to Brian Butler and his wife Martina who visited the school recently to accept a cheque for £555 which was the proceeds of our Choirs for Sight Concert.  The money will go to the RP Ireland Fighting Blindness Campaign.

Chernobyl Awareness

We were delighted to welcome the Garda Chernobyl Ambulance which was heading off with relief aid during the Easter holidays.  The pupils donated supplies of flour and Calpol which were accepted by Garda Trevor Laffan on behalf of the relief project.

  Going Underground!

On Saturday, May 22nd, a group from the school will take part in a walk through the Lee Tunnel before it is officially opened to traffic. This will raise funds for various local charities.
