BUILDING AND REORDERING OF CHURCHES

Images of Mary

Every Church should contain an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As well as expressing her singular place in the liturgy, the location of her image should allow for personal devotion. This location should be determined as early as possible within the context of the overall design of the church. An appropriate setting for the image, which could be in a special place, or chapel, ought to be provided.

Shrines

A shrine is a place set apart within or outside a church to contain an image or some object of devotion such as a relic. It is desirable that shrines should not be haphazardly located around a church but should be planned in carefully defined relationship to the architectural framework of the building. The decoration of a shrine should be related and subordinate to the object enshrined, but at the same time it should have an appropriate richness sufficient to indicate the importance of that object.
