The History of the ATARI 2600

The ATARI 2600 was definatley the Playstation of its day. Everybody had one! Released in 1978 the 2600 was making ATARI a fortune. Everything was grand until the start of the '80's.

I'm sure many of you readers out there will remember the console crash of the early 80's, well we all have ATRAI to thank for that! The problem was that is was too easy to produce games for the format. This resulted in a fllod of games being released for the system, many of which were crap. The buying public soon got fed up of buying games that were rubbish and decided to stop buying all together.

This was bad news for practically all of the companies involved in producing games for the 2600 and many companies folded up during this depression.

But in its heyday the 2600 was home to the big companies like NAMCO and TAITO and gave birth to one of the most powerful third parties out there today, Activision. So at least something good came out at the end of it all, which is nice.
