The MegaDrive was released in Japan in 1989. At that time Nintendo
were the hotshots with their NES so the sales were slow for the first year for the
MegaDrive. What Sega really needed was a mascot like Mario
to help boost their sales. Enter Sonic... When Sonic was released in 1990 the MegaDrive shot into the limelight. Everyone wanted one. By now the hype was building for the release here in Europe. When the console did arrive people couldn't get enough of it. The amazing graphics, the supurb sounds, the great gameplay. Surely this was the stuff of dreams... |

What really made the machine was the amount of software available for it. Sports,
action, adventure, RPG's, driving, shoot'em-ups, you name it and the console had it.
This plus the major advertising that Sega did, made the Megadrive an
unstoppable machine (sales wise) up until '94/'95 when the Saturn was released.
Unfortunately for Sega they wouldn't generate the same size of sales for another console until the Dreamcast but the memories the MegaDrive gave us will always be with us. |
