On November 21 1990 Nintendo finally released the SuperFamicom(or SNES as it's
called in the west). It wasn't the first 16-bit machine released, SEGA's Megadrive
had beaten the SNES to the shops by about a year, but it was one of the most powerful.
The SNES came bunbled with Super Mario World and Pilot Wings. Super Mario World was hearlded as "The Best Platformer Ever" and Pilot Wings amazed everyone with it's mode 7 graphics(a kind of psyudo 3D effect). It quickly became the fastest selling console in Japan and interest in the west began to mount. |

For the US launch in September '91 Nintendo decided to redesign the look of the
SNES(pictured above). This new look along with it's growing catalogue of games
was too much for the average american gamer to overlook and it became the fastest
selling console in America.
Unfortunately here in Europe, Nintendo were in no hurry to release the SNES and we were forced to wait until June of '92 until we could marvel at what the rest of the world had been playing since 1990. American and Japanese gamers couldn't get enough of the SNES but the late start in Europe had an effect on it's sales. The SNES was being outsold by SEGA's Megadrive over here. Apart from this problem the SNES was home to many AAA games and was reguarded by many to be the best multiplayer machine available with classic titles like Super Mario Kart, Super Bomberman, International Superstar Soccer. |
