The Great Pyramid
Rising over the Giza Plateau, the great pyramid is the last of the seven
wonders of the world. But is it just an empty tomb, or has it yet to give
up all of its secrets ?
It is built out of six and a half million tonnes of rock and rises 146.5
metres into the sky, the Great Pyramid contains more masonry than all the
churches, cathedrals and chapels in England combined. For more than 4,500
years it has remained one of the largest buildings to ever be constructed.
Scientist have pinpointed the date it was built to 2,500BC, but why it was
built still remains to be discovered.
In March 1993, a German engineer set out to find the answer. He is the inventor
of Upnaut 2, a $250,000 remote-controled robot mounted with a video camera.
He sent this robot up a ventilation shaft heading south from the Queens
Chamber (one of the chambers in the pyramid). It travelled 60 metres along
the cramped shaft (approx. 20cm x 20cm) before its path was blocked by a
limestone door. He was amazed to see what appeared to be handles and a gap
between the door and the floor. He had found an undiscovered chamber in the
Great Pyramid.
Though many tried to find evidence inside the pyramid, it was not until
1837 when Colonel Howard Vyse searched the interior that anything of
signifigance was found. He blasted his way through the rock above the Kings
Chamber and discovered four sealed chambers. On the walls of one of these
chambers he found red painted hieroglyphics which included the name Khufu.
This gave Egyptologists the clue they neede to prove that the pyramid had
been built by the Pharaoh Khufu. But these hieroglyphics have a number of
inconsistencies.
The hieroglyphics were the only sign of Khufu's name to be found anywhere
in the pyramid.
They were located in a hidden, obscure part of the pyramid.
They were found in a chamber which only Vyse had access to.
Several of the hierogglyphs were painted upside-down, some were misspelt
or used bad grammer, others were unrecognisable.
This theory would point to the possibility that Vyse forged the hieroglyphs in
order to justify a long, costly and otherwise fruitless expedition.
If you believe this theory, it means that the Great Pyramids' purpose has
yet to be discovered. Opening the door to the hidden chamber may reveal
it. Another alternitive to discovering the secret would be to explore the
chamber betwwen the paws of the Sphinx.
Whatever the case may be, perhaps it will finaly resolve some of the
mysteries surrounding the Great Pyramid.
