Our school has been
taking part in the Cumann na mBunscol football competition since 1992.
At that time the
school played in the Div. 7 competition as we were only a one teacher school
with 22 pupils on roll. We had no football jerseys and played in
navy, red and green t-shirts which Fr. Fleming bought for us.
We didn’t have much
success in the early years and yet each Summer we looked forward
to the games and our rare victories were always a cause of great celebration.
As our numbers grew
we moved to higher divisions.
We had a sponsored spelling
competition and bought a set of sky blue jerseys in 1997.
Finally in 1999
we reached our first final. Everyone was very exited and proud as we lined
out in O’Connor Park.
Unfortunately it wasn’t
to be our lucky day and we were defeated by Clonbullogue.
Then in 2000, we again
made it to the Div.5 final. This time we were determined
not to go away empty handed and we won a great match against Rahan. It
was our school’s first title and we had a wonderful party in the school
to celebrate.
In the 2001 season we
reached the final again but were defeated by Croghan.
In 2001 we entered the
hurling competition for the first time ,in a combined Killoughey parish
team with Gortnamona and Mountbolus schools.
