The author Donie Murphy grew up in the Duhallow area, the wellspring of many who formed the nucleus of the South West fighting force.

His home environment and his early education gave him an insight into the events of the "Troubled Times" which he has graphically captured in this book.

Many years of research have gone into this undertaking and the details of the vast majority of the incidents have been gleaned from those who took part in the making of this history.

Hugh Martin, a correspondent with the English 'Daily News" in 1919 correctly summed up the British Strategy at that time as:

"A Government by tanks"

"It is only a temporary expedient" continued Martin, "There are limits to this most grotesque comedy and in the end we shall have to give up the hypocracy of pretending to be concerned about freedom in Czechoslovakia or the infamy of stamping on freedom in Ireland..."

Donie Murphy's book traces the incidents that led up to this statement and follows the ensuing fight for Irish Freedom as it happened in South West Ireland.
