District Inspector McDonagh of King Street barracks,
a veteran of the force, was shot and wounded by members
of the Cork No. 1 Brigade as he supervised ballot boxes
during municipal elections.
Later
that evening policemen left their stations and rampaged
throughout Cork city. Homes were wrecked by them, families
were threatened and some people were assaulted
with rifle butts before discipline was restored by their
superiors.
