Fatal Attack on Constable Fredrick Sterland

(Irish War of Independence - First Cork Brigade)

Constable Frederick Sterland was shot dead at Cook Street on the evening of May 8th., 1921.

As he walked along Cook Street in Cork city, a member of the Black and Tans was attacked by four men and shot dead. Fredrick Sterland had earlier been drinking with the same party of men in a nearby hotel and was followed by them after he left the premises.

After the shooting he was brought to the South Infirmary but died shortly afterwards. Birmingham born Constable Sterland, a twenty-three-year-old married man with just four months service in Ireland, was a member of the transport section.  He was a draughtsman and a soldier before joining the RIC.
