Leading Republican Shot Dead by R.I.C.

(Irish War of Independence - First Cork Brigade)

A plaque indicates the house at 82, Douglas Street, where Tadg O'Sullivan was shot dead.

Captain Tadg O'Sullivan, Second Brigade, Cork I.R.A, a native of Rathmore, Co. Kerry, was shot dead near where he lived at Douglas Street by a group of Black and Tans, led by the infamous Sergeant Hollywood. He was initially spotted by two plain-clothes RIC detectives and when he made an effort to slip away through a nearby house, eight policemen pursued him and followed him inside, firing as they went. When he tried to make his escape through a back window he was shot a number of times.

Headstone at the Republican plot at St. Finbarr's Cemetery, Cork.

The RIC made no attempt to capture O’Sullivan (who was wanted by them following his participation in the nearby Barrack Street ambush a few months previously) and his bullet riddled body was found in the yard below.
