RIC Man Shot Dead in Ambush Near Banteer
On March 8th., 1921 men from the Kanturk (Sixth) Battalion Cork No. 2 Brigade ambushed an RIC patrol at Father Murphy's Bridge, near Banteer. One Black and Tan was killed and three others wounded. Arms and ammunition were collected by the IRA at the scene after the ambush. The location had been occupied for several days before the attack, the IRA changing their ambush party in relays

The dead man was Nicholas Somers, a twenty two year old single man. He was originally from Co. Wexford where he had been a farm worker.
