Landmine Attack at Carrigshane Cross
On Sunday, July 3 1921, at Carrigshane Cross (on the main Youghal road about a mile from Midleton) a mine, similar to the type used at Ballyedikin Cross a few months previously, exploded amidst a party of British troops resulting in a number of them being seriously wounded. British forces subsequently carried out reprisals for the attack at the seaside village of Ballycotton, eight miles from the scene of the explosion. Two local men, who were named as R. Cusack and J. Whelan, were shot with Cusack later dying from his wounds.
