Death of RIC Sergeant at Inchigeelagh
Daniel Maunsell, a forty-nine-year-old married man, originally from Tralee, Co Kerry. was appointed Acting Sergeant of the RIC in January 1910. He was Sergeant in charge at Inchigeelagh Barracks for a number of years up to January 1920 when he was transferred to Macroom, approximately eleven miles away. He did, however, continue to live with his family in Inchigeelagh.

At around 9.00 on a Sunday evening he was leaving his home to travel to Macroom when he was ambushed and shot. He died of his injuries shortly afterwards. A police patrol returning from the scene of his killing were themselves ambushed, with several of them being hit. A Sergeant Runane was the most seriously wounded of the patrol.

Maunsell, who had twenty-nine years’ police service, was a farmer before joining the RIC. During the time he was in charge at Inchigeela, at least two unsucessfull attacks were made on the RIC barracks there.
