East Cork 3 km Winter Series - Introduction & Information

The East Cork 3km Winter Series is a series of seven 3 km races held over a 1 km loop just South of Midleton in East Cork, near the village of Ballinacurra.

The races start at 7:30pm and are held every 3rd Tuesday, starting in mid-October and finishing in mid-February the next year.

They are organised by East Cork Athletic Club and the races are open to all club and non-club runners. The entry fee is € 3.

Any runner completing 5 out of the 7 races in the series recieves a T-shirt.

Each race attracts about 100 runners with finishing times between 9 and 19 minutes.

Although the race is run under streetlights, it is recommended that you wear a reflective vest or bib.

Directions...From Cork City, take the main road East (N25) for Youghal / Waterford. At the only roundabout on the Midleton by-pass, take the road South for Whitegate / Cloyne. Pass the Shell garage and take the 2nd right just as the road begins to go downhill. Look for suitable parking and register.

Previous results can be found on the Running in Cork Blog (see top right of this page). Individual times can be seen by clicking on the links on the menu bar above.

The course is basically 3 laps of a 1 km loop with the 1km, 2km and finish at the same point.

There is usually parking available near the registration point. Cars should not be parked where they might cause an obstruction (i.e. corners, outside residents houses, etc)

Course details...
The first 500 metres or so are flat. At about the 500m mark (bottom right on map), there is a sharp little uphill section for about 20 metres followed by a longer straight section of about 300 metres which goes very slightly uphill. The road then turns sharply left (top right on map) and the next 200 metres  to the 1km / 2km / Finish are all downhill.

If you are still unsure about where the course is, you can see an interactive map on the MapMyRun website. The link is HERE.
