CCCP is a software package designed to control costs in the construction industry, by tracking costs as they occur, rather than depending on invoices which may be received later.
CCCP is currently in use in a medium-sized construction company in Galway. Previously, the company's cost control process consisted of using invoices to get information about costs.
To find out how much any project costs, the usual method used by construction companies is to add up the amounts on any invoices received. However, what can happen is that invoices are received weeks or even months after the project has been completed. By then a project may have run over budget, and it is too late to remedy the situation.
With CCCP on the other hand, the costs of items purchased, of plant, labour and other development costs are all visible as they occur. So, if the costs of a project are running ahead of what they should be, this can be investigated straight away.
Personnel on-site (usually a foreman) order items or plant, and send a copy of the order into the office. This information is input into the CCCP system by office staff. The hours (both normal and/or overtime) worked by employees are also entered, as are payments to sub-contractors, set-up costs and other ongoing costs such as insurance, electricity and so on.
At this point, the real benefits of CCCP become apparent, as the system displays both overall and detailed project costs (including down to the level of individual orders). These detailed reports show how the total project cost is derived. The Cost Reports can be viewed in Report format. A further enhancement to the system is the Executive Information System (EIS). Using the EIS, the reports can also be viewed in Bar Chart or Pie Chart formats.
