At the Last Gig in Town?
CORRUPTED in interview before BLAST
The first thing you notice about the Green Room of the Temple Bar Music Centre is that it's actually painted a very dark blue. There was a small crowd in the smoky room on Saturday, 12th May 2001. Bands and band followers were parked on the black leather sofas, or perched on the surfaces in front of the dressing-room mirrors. CORRUPTED were firmly in control of one couch. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the band seemed in good humour, despite a problem they'd had earlier with their sound check.

It was my second time at the venue, which seemed to be in that state of organised chaos associated with a BLAST gig. This Saturday was a scorcher, and many gig-goers were sitting outside in Temple Bar enjoying the weather while waiting for their favourite bands. Downstairs in the Music Centre it was cooler, darker. I asked the band what they thought of it.

Morgan: The BLAST gigs are great because the kids go wild. The other gigs we’ve played, the older, more set-in-their-ways rockers would just sit down and drink their beer. They’d just be kind-of sitting there going “Impress us”, and stuff. I think it’s better to play BLAST…

D.G: …kids hear a power chord, they just go fuckin’ mad, like… hop around the place. It’s cool…

Antony: ..plus you have a bigger stage as well, where the likes of, say, the Gasworks, and other gigs we’ve played you’re two-foot off the ground and you couldn’t see anything from our point of view or people seeing us either. It was too clumped together.

The Gasworks is closed now. Okay, there were problems with the stage, but it’s another venue gone.

Antony: It’s true. There’s not a lot of venues here for the likes of metal bands at all. Hopefully more venues will be opened for the likes of our music.

Antony seemed very much into the interview thing. He spoke seriously about the topics, aware, perhaps, of being "on the record" with the tape recorder turning over. Emmet was more thoughtful, preferring to hear what other people were saying before committing himself. He dragged on a cigarette between comments. Morgan was intelligent and good humoured, a natural frontman. D.G.'s comments were more spontaneous, while Scooby Doogan sat and grinned through the whole interview. It wouldn't be until later when I was asking questions of them individually for the Profile section of the Website that the quieter members of the band relaxed into it. Who gets nervous before they go on stage? Who’s the worst?

Emmet: Antony…

Antony: Probably me. I don’t know why. Consciously you… You go out and you want to do the best gig that you can. Beforehand it’s the waiting around and stuff like that…The monitors weren’t working earlier, but we know our stuff...We couldn’t hear anything in the monitors at all. Hopefully it’ll be worked out by the time we go on stage.

Morgan: My mike kept squeaking… It was squeakin’ by itself… I think it’s possessed, or some shit.

The last gig you played was on 24th March. Are there any changes to the set?

Morgan: Oh there is…

D.G: Big time… Totally changed around… Everything’s changed around.

Have you added in any songs?

Morgan: Yeah we have a new song, “In the Garden”, it’s being showcased today as such. There’s no lyrics for it… so don’t try and work it out!

D.G: You told me you had lyrics for that!

Morgan: No I don’t! (Laughs)

24th March was the last gig. Today is the 12th May. Why so long between gigs?

DG: Treasureisland got back to me over the phone and said people were hurt in the mosh… CORRUPTED’s music was too heavy and they didn’t want kids hurt because bigger CORRUPTED fans were throwing their weight around…

Did you agree with that assessment of the last gig then?

D.G: No.

Antony: Partially [the length of time between gigs] was my fault too, because I’m a carpenter and I was studying for my final exams. I have to have a “plan B”. People should stay in school and stuff…

Antony's comment about staying in school produced snorts of laughter from the others, but he seemed to be in earnest. I wondered what type of schoolboys these guys had made... Morgan Angel in a school uniform was too much of a stretch to the imagination at that hour of a Saturday. I changed the subject.

Anything special anyone does before a gig to get ready?

Morgan: Beer…!

D.G: Get locked…!

Emmet: Beer.

Morgan: You attack the beer... You don’t attack it too much though. That’s about it.

Emmet: Have a few scoops. Get nice and relaxed before going on stage. Just don’t take it too seriously.
