VIKING HOARDS IN
COURT
On Wednesday the 13th of June 2001, the
Montague Heritage Services
visited our school in conjunction with the I.N.T.O Heritage Schools
Scheme.
Jessica and Alan both entertained 4th, 5th
and 6th for nearly two hours showing us how the Vikings
lived and fought wars. Jessica taught us how a Viking housewife lived
and showed the meals and work tools that were part and parcel of her
life. The girls especially were shocked when she announced that it was
quite normal for a Viking girl to be married by 13 years old!!
Alan explained all about Vikings battles and the
weapons they used.
Four unlucky pupils were dressed up as Vikings. Each
of the four were given hats and tunics and had to help demonstrate
daily jobs and how to use weapons. Three of the lads were dressed up
as soldiers each with different weapons. One lad was dressed up as a
wealthy soldier with chain mail, a helmet and a sword. Another lad was
dressed up as an archer with a bow and arrows while the last boy
struggled to hold up his shield and spear at the same time.

The three classes enjoyed the whole show from
beginning to end except when we had to help tidy up! We learned more
about the Vikings in two hours than we would learn reading in two
months and we hope to see the schools scheme continue in the future.
