February 2005

To help St. Mary's and the environment we must REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

September 2007  -  June 2008   October '08   Christmas '08

On Feb. 4th, Mrs. Kavanagh's Class carried out our 4th "Lunch Box Survey" in order to see if we had reached some of our targets set in our Jan. 18th Action Plan. We were delighted with the results as in most cases we exceeded our targets. Some examples of our success are:

                   Tinfoil – down from 71 to 24 (target – 40)

                   Plastic bags – down from 125 to 32 (target – 80)

                   Re-usable plastic bottles - up from 239 to 318 (target –

                  260)

            Sandwich boxes – up from 165 to 279 (target – 200)

                 Tetra-paks – down from 50 to 39 (target – 35)

4th, 5th & 6th classes carried out their 3rd "Litter Survey" on Feb. 4th also. Our target was to maintain the litter weight on the school yard below 1kg. Our litter findings weighed 725g!

4     The two 5th classes - Mrs. Duggan's & Miss Lynch's - wrote letters to Nenagh Town Council & Nenagh Tidy Towns Committee informing them of our Green-Schools activities. We were delighted to receive a Mayoral Certificate from the Mayor of our town, congratulating us on our achievements for the town of Nenagh and its environment.

Our Green-Schools Day of Action was held on Feb. 15th. Everybody was involved in the early "Spring-clean" of the school yard, convent garden, school playing field & camogie field. We were astonished at all the litter we found & shocked to know that much of it is rubbish being dumped from nearby housing estates. 6th Classes intend to put up an "illegal dumping" sign in the near future.

As part of the Day of Action there was an environmental survey carried out by the pupils from 1st to 6th class.

Litter on the school grounds was reduced by three-quarters. Litter wardens from 4th to 6th classes encouraged everybody to put their litter in the bin.

Some new recycling ideas were introduced too:

st       Stamps; Cards; ink cartridges and batteries were

r         recycled.

Our black wheelie bins were down to 4!

Regular assemblies were held to inform the school of Committee decisions and to celebrate our successes.

A Green-schools notice board was put in place to keep everyone informed of progress.

Mrs. Murray's and Ms. Lynch's classes kept an organic garden using our home-made compost.

One thing we will always remember is the Green-Schools Rap,

"         "Our Hopes and Dreams", composed by Leanne McGrath & Claire Mahony (6th class) - a clever rap, which helped keep our Green Code in mind.

We're St. Mary' s and we're here to say

                   Reduce, reuse and recycle everyday.

We're in the green schools community

So keep our land from getting dirty.

We all wanna be the best,

The cleanest school in the west.

               You think you're hip,

              You think you're cool.

                   Prove it!

                      Help clean the school.

Clean and tidy is the only way,

To keep our schoolyard every day.

You wanna be cool? You wanna be rock?

Then put your lunch in a sandwich box.

You think ........

Forgettin' tetra-packs and Capri-suns our task

Use a plastic bottle or a flask.

Put reusable paper in the boxes around,

And when you need paper there it will be found.

You think ......

Stamps, cards and batteries,

Put them in the greenboxes please,

We recycle ink cartridges too!

It's an environmental thing to do!

You think .....

We all want to get the green flag,

And be the best they ever had.

St. Mary's

We're gonna win

At. Mary's

Put your rubbish in the bin.

(Repeat x 3)
