Recently we had a litter slogan competition. The best six slogans will be made into signs that will be displayed around the school.

We also carried out further litter and waste surveys to ascertain how el  we are doing and what further action we can take. One of these, for example, was a lunch-box survey which revealed that the students wash, squash and recycle a massive 420 tetra-paks per week.

We need to look at ways this number can be reduced. The survey showed that we bring 1060 plastic bottles and 165 'Capri-sun' packs in our lunch-boxes every week. These, of course, are containers that can be re-used or reduced. So there is much work ahead for us to do.

It will be the Green-School Committee's task to come up with and Action Plan (using the results of the surveys), which with everyone's co-operation and effort will make our school even more environmentally friendly and eventually enable us to be awarded the Green-School flag.

What did we do?

A parent, Marion Doran, has joined our committee.

As a result of suggestions from children in 4th , 5th

and 6th classes "litter wardens" were introduced. They

monitor the litter situation at lunchtime.

We have put a "re-use box" in every classroom for

reusable paper - paper with one clean side.

The number of Capri-Sun drinks have been reduced.

The number of plastic packaging for lunches has also

     been reduced.

Both 6th Classes are monitoring and recording the

number of bins going to the landfill and recycling

     depot.

Children are preparing for our Christmas decoration

competition using recyclable material. The closing

date for the competition is December 6th.
