There is a lot of news to report following our very successful Green Week. We launched a new theme in our Green School's Programme, as we try to achieve another Green Flag. Our special Green Week began on Monday with a Water Audit.

Five girls from our Green  Committee undertook to calculate the number of taps, radiators and toilets in our school.

Based on an average taken in First Class, they calculated the average amount of water used per person per day in the school is approximately 13 litres. This does not include Art days when we use even more water. They also reported three dropping taps in the school. We also discovered that there are 16 toilets in the school that ahve a half-flush button. This gave the committee an idea. Thay decided to launch an awareness campaign to let everybody know how much water could be saved by using the half-flush and not the full flush button.

A committee member reminded us of some water saving tips every day on the intercom.

It was decided to launch a new improved energy checklist in every classroom. This checklist allows the energy monitor in each classroom to ensure that the lights, computers and CD players are switched off when they are not being used but additionally to ensure that the taps are turne3d off with no drips or leaks.

Ms. O'Sullivan's class undertook to check our energy usage by reading our electricity meter. We noticed a large reduction in our energy usage. Our average weekly energy usage has dropped from 615 units weekly to 590 units weekly. We were delighted with these resu;ts and hope to keep up the good work.

Mrs. Regina Kelly's class organised a School Clean-up. Every class from 1st to 6th picked up the litter from their designated area on Wednesday of Green Week. Results from this exercise were a little disappointing. However, the girls were allowed to pick up rubbish from a previously unrecorded area. The rubbish was weighed. Results are on display on our Green noticeboard.

Ms. Suzanne Kelly's class organised a Lunchbox survey on Thursday. Every class was visited to check and see how many re-usable bottles, sandwich boxes, tin foil and plastic bags they brought to school that day. The girls also checked how much fruit and vegetables were being brought. Here are some of their results:

We now have 368 girls using a sandwich box daily.

   361 girls use a re-usable bottle.

   Only 6 children bring a tetra-pak to school.6 children had a

              tetra-pak.

   Just 6 girls had capri-suns.

Mrs. Kavanagh's girls designed a graph to demonstrate the number of bins we use in the school. They compared the results with the results they had calculated in February 2008 and found that the number of black bins had increased. This is bad news and we hope to do better for our next Green Week in December. The girls also found that the number of blue recycling bins had decreases by 3. This is good news and shows us that our hard work is paying off.

The week culminated in a whole School Assembly on Friday. We were introduced to 'Aquamarine', our Water Symbol, designed by Mrs. George and Mrs. Girard's girls. The children also wrote a poem about Aquamarine.

Every class in the school made a fantastic poster, each focusing on a different aspect of ways to save water. The posters were displayed during the assembly.

One of the useful tips we heard at the Assembly was that a bath can use up to 80 litres of water, whereas a shower uses approximately 35 litre of water.

We also learned about the Water Cycle.

Each class put a huge amount of work into their poster and into the Assembly. We had a great start to our Water Theme and now look forward to our Christmas Decoration Competition in December.
