Today and Yesteryear

The pub with old mellowed woodwork and ornate tiled floors is a delight to the eye. Dating back to 1914 it is divided into seperate and distinct areas. One can enjoy 'the kitchen' with an original black range. Make your way to the 'store' and 'tap' rooms, or stay put in the 'public bar' and for those who have never frequented a 'snug' before, you may relax in the privacy of a time gone by.

A History

It was back in 1885 that the youngest of the large Markham family - Elizabeth was born in Cooraclare, West Clare. By the time of her death in 1960 she had become recognised as one of Irelands foremost exponents of the concertina.
In the intervening years, Elizabeth had married Miko Crotty and together they established Crotty's Public House in the Square, Kilrush. It was from this house of Music that Elizabeth Crotty's reputation quietly grew. "This was due of course to the sweetness of her music but, as well as that to the sweetness and graciousness of the lady herself" Ciaran Mac Mathuna. Ciaran's first visit to rural Ireland in the 1950's with R.T.E.'s mobile unit was to record Mrs.Crotty.
Concertina players like Noel Hill speak very highly of her and recorded her versions of certain tunes; as did the Chieftans back in the 70's in their 8th album.
Mrs.Crotty became a pioneer of the fleadh Cheoil movement and was elected the first persident of Comhaltas in Clare, a position she held until she died. Her death was mourned all over the country, both as a very likable person and as well as a very fine musician. Even the President of Ireland at the time, Eamonn de Valera, sent a telegram of condolence to the family.
It is a testament to her legacy, that on the 40th anniversity of her death, her stature in Irish traditional music grows even stronger.
