Wicklow Win Roinn a Dó in Leinster Blitz

The annual Cumann na mBunscol Laighin Indoor Hurling tournament took place in The National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Thursday 15th December. This year all twelve Leinster counties were represented. Counties were divided into groups of four with each county playing the others in the group. In Wicklow’s group were Wexford, Longford and Louth. The boys from the Garden county drew 1-1 with Wexford, defeated Louth 2-0 but were beaten by Longford 3-1 in a most exciting match. As a result of the their performance, the Wicklow lads qualified for roinn a dó. In their semi-final they defeated Kildare 3-1. In the other semi-final Westmeath beat a much-fancied Dublin side 2-0. The roinn a dó final was a cracking affair with the Wicklow side winning with a score-line of 2-1. A very interesting point to note is that three of the original group in which Wicklow competed took all honours on the day: Longford went on to win roinn a haon when they beat Kilkenny 4-2 and Wexford defeated 7-0 Louth in the roinn a trí final.
The Wicklow team was selected following a final selection process in Roundwood GAA Hall earlier in the month. The boys who represented Wicklow came from six different schools. managed by Hugh Kenny, Tom Byrne and Andrew Cornyn with assistance from Sheila Driver. The panel on the day was James Manley (Glenealy), Dara Henderson, Mark Lennon (St. Cronan’s), Ben McCormack (Scoil Chualann), Colm McCray, Patrick Doran (Carnew), Paddy Mellon (Templerainey), Alan Kelly, Matthew Cullen and Emmet Cullen (St. Patrick’s). Following the day’s programme of matches, Kilkenny hurler Richie Power presented all the boys participating with a sports bag and a sliotar. Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin is deeply indebted to Hugh Kenny, Tom Byrne and Andrew Cornyn who managed the Wicklow team with assistance from Glenealy’s Sheila Driver.
