Sports Day 9ú Meitheamh 2005

Over 1000 Participate in Sports Day Success in Greystones

Sports Day Success in Greystones Approximately one thousand children from over thirty schools throughout the county descended on Greystones Rugby Club for the 2005 Cumann na mBunscol Sports Day. The weather was beautiful and contributed in no small way to the success of the day. The change of venue was necessary from a logistics point of view, especially in relation to parking and safety in general. Proceedings got underway with the grand parade of athletes. The array of colour in the parade was hugely expressive. Congratulations to local school, St. Laurence’s on winning the trophy for the best turned-out school. The standard of competition was very high with the various trophies going to a wide variety of schools. There was a large increase in the number of children participating from schools for pupils with special needs. The inclusion of these special children has enriched sports day beyond all measure. Thanks to Eleanor Threadgold of St. Catherine’s School in Newcastle who organised this section. Indeed the rest of the committee, Tony McGinley of Valleymount, Ciarán O’Neill of St. Kevin’s Greystones, Micheál Ó Murchú of St. Cronan’s and Alice O’Connor of St. Fergal’s put in many hours behind the scenes to ensure that this highlight of the year was so successful. On the day many teachers helped out as well as memnersof Co Wicklow Athletic Board. Willie Byrne, the caretaker in Greystones RFC deserves special mention. Over the last month he on hand to assist us on many occasions. Over the last couple of years the management of traffic was problematic, but with the change venue and with the assistance of Greystones Gardaí this was not the case this year. To the Greystones Gardaí we also say go raibh mile maith agat. Sports Day indeed was a fitting and colourful end to the Cumann na mBunsccol year.
