On Inishmaan all the houses are built on the sheltered side of the island,

on a good height above sea-level. From any of those cottages one could

see a large portion of the island, consisting of little green fields surrounded

by high stone walls and a great expanse of flat crags. Beyond that is the

wide stretch of sea which lies between the Aran Islands and Connemara.

The island is dominated by two great prehistoric stone forts which are of

enthralling interest to the antiquarian. There are also the ruins of small stone

churches which were built by the saints.
