Inis Mór
Inishmore is the largest of the Aran Islands and it is here on it's most westerly shores that the memorable film Man of Aran was made by Robert O'Flaherty, the American film director. One of the wonders of this island is the mystical fort Dún Aengus which is built on the very edge of a sheer cliff. Ionad Arann (Aran's Heritage Centre) is located in Kilronan about five minutes walk from the pier. Opened in 1992, this major heritage and interpretive centre was established to intrduce the visitor to the landscape, traditions and culture of the harsh but beautiful Aran Islands. Personalities: Some of the interesting people from Inishmore you might meet throughout the island would be: Treasa Ní Mhiolláin, a well-known sean-nós singer, has won all Ireland prizes for her singing and has published a cassette of her songs; John Joe O Fátharta is a traditional accordion player. In a different vein Barry Ronan is well-known for his modern songs in Irish and in English, all his own compositions. Seán O Flaithearta is a young artist from Inishmore who has adressed social and political issues in his paintings.
