DARA
Ó CONAOLA
________________
The publication of Dara Ó Conaola’s first
book of short stories, Mo Chathair Ghriobháin, established
him as one of the most important writers writing in the Irish language
in recent times. His book of tales and stories Night Ructions,
(translated by Gabriel Rosenstock)was launched at the 1990 Sunday Times
Festival of Literature, Hay-On-Wye, Wales. His novella Misiún
ar Muir/Sea Mission, reissued 2001, was staged at An Taibhdhearc
as part of the Galway Arts Festival in 1992 and at Expo ‘92 in
Spain. Dara’s work has been translated into German, French, Croatian
and Romanian. His short story Amuigh Liom Féin is on
the Irish Leaving Certificate curriculum.
He participated in the Cúirt International Festival of Literature
in 2002. Two songs by him are included on Lasairfhíona Ní
Chonaola’s CD An Raicín Álainn, one of
which was performed by her on The Late Late Show and The
John Creedon Show in 2003.
Tá sé de cháil
air go bhfuil ina chumas na scéalta iontacha seo a chuir ar pháipear
i nGaeilge ghlan sholéite i stíl bheoga nua-aimseartha.
New book, Window On Aran, by Sean Spellissy,
contains information and photographs of Dara and his writing.

Amuigh Liom Féin
Tá an Ghaeilge scríofa
seo le moladh go h-árd na spéire.... is pléisiúr
go fíor í a bheith chomh fóirstineach ar
gach aon dóigh agus chomh simplí, díreach
gan a bheith leamh am ar bith....
Colmán Ó hUallachain (An tOireachtas
1986)
Ta an tuiscint dhúchasach agus
an cleachtadh saoil nua-aoiseach snaidhmithe le chéile
go paiteanta ag Dara. Níor mhiste comaoin bheag a chuir
an sainmhíniu a thug sé féin ar an litríocht
agus a rá gurb éard ata ina chuid scéalta
ealaín a chuireas ábhar léitheoireachta
ar fónamh ar fáil.

Gaeltachta, Feabhra 1984)

Cor in Aghaidh an Chaim
Tá samhlaíocht neamhchoitianta
ag an scríbhneoir Árannach
seo, rud atá leirithe cheana aige dúinn san leabhar An
Gaiscíoch Beag, athainisint bhríomhar ar sheanscéal,
agus Mo Chathair Ghriobháin, bailiúchan scéalta
a bhfuil stampa soiléir na hindividiúlachta air.
Is léir ón leabhar nua seo agus
ón aitheantas a thug an Chomhairle Ealaíon dó nuair
a bronnadh sparántacht air, go bhfuil scríbhneoir dáirire
inár measc. Feiceann sé an saol trí shúile
an fhile ina lánúire agus is oscailt súl don léitheoir,
óg is críonna, an radharc scanrúil, eachtrúil,
greannmhar sin. An bua is mó atá ag an údar an
tsaothair seo ná cló nua a chur ar an sean, an traidisiún
béil a thabhairt isteach i ndéantus liteartha ar linne
féin.
An Gaiscíoch Beag
Nuair a bhí mise óg in E/irinn
fado ní riabh mé cosúil leis an gcuid eile de na
gasúir ar chor ar bith. Ni bhínn ag corraí timpeall
mórán. Ni bhínn ag béiceadh, ná ag
caitheamh anuas rudaí de na selfeanna mar is gnách le
gasúir bheaga eile a dhéanamh.
Bhi mé chomh leisciúil
sin gur thug gach uile dhuine an Gaiscíoch Beag orm le
searbhas agus magadh.....
An Gúm 1979
Mo Chathair Ghriobhain
Great short stories, surreal and beautifully
written.
Faighimid léargas sna scéalta
seo ar chathair ghríobháin a aigne féin,
faoin tuaith agus sa bhaile mór, scéalta uafáis,
scéalta grinn, pictiúir dodhearmadtha de scríbhneoir
stoite ar strae, ag lorg dídine.
Foilsithe ag An Gúm 1981.
Fourfront
The language of these versions is often like
that of the countrymen and women who impressed the poet Yeats by their
capacity to think still in Irish while using English words....And there
is a lesson here: that those who translate a tradition, including those
who attack it in that very act of translation, may ultimately do more
to defend and develop it than those who put the relics of a 'folk past'
into glass cases for the approval of antiquarians and tourists. Here,
on the contrary, is a book which demonstrates that the example Kafka
has been as fully assimilated as that of Leabhar Sheáin Uí
Chonaill. The mingled, gloriously impure nature of our world is well
expressed in this most hybrid of literary forms.
