Alternative Medicine

People's attitudes are changing though, and holistic medicine is now a rapidly expanding health care system throughout the world. If we take a look back at old Irish traditional medicines such as Irish Moss seaweed for colds, we can also begin to recover part of our heritage.

The treatment of the entire mind and body as one, is the ultimate goal of holistic health care disciplines. A familiar example is a heart attack. Even orthodox medicine realises that the major cause for heart attacks is stress. Relaxation is usually recommended after a heart attack by your doctor. While the link has been made between mind and body this knowledge is not properly taken advantage of.

Relaxation should be advised as fundamental from a young age to reduce the risk of having a heart attack at all. This second approach is taken to all illnesses in the holistic approach.

Emotional problems of all types are taken as early warning signs for future physical illnesses and therefore preventative action can be taken.

Also, many therapies encourage some level of self treatment. This means that advice can be given as to what you can do at home to improve your health. Health care is not solely the domain of doctors; we can all play a part in our own health care.
