Introduction

Welcome to the Drogheda Green Guide. The aim of this guide is to provide a reference for citizens of, and visitors to Drogheda of environmental issues, nature resources, green community services, and green businesses in the Drogheda area. If you want to make a difference, this guide will show you how!

Included is a 'Green Map' of Drogheda where you will find the locations of recycle points, art galleries, second-hand shops, bicycle shops, organic suppliers, museums, and much more!

Drogheda was founded by the Danes in 911. Its beautiful natural surroundings on the River Boyne, as well as its vibrant town centre, have much to offer residents and visitors. As a commuter town, Drogheda has an increasing traffic and pollution problem. Yet there are many advantages to make the transition to sustainable living easier. Our town is compact and flat, making it ideal for walking and cycling. Pedestrianisation of Main Street is underway, which will add a spacious, quiet atmosphere to the town centre. Drogheda has many shops offering eco-options, such as organic and fairtrade food, or second-hand goods and bicycles! There are many recycle points in the town and one of the best recycling facilities in the country, V&W recycling is also located nearby in Dundalk.

There are 19 Green Schools in Co. Louth. These schools have taken initiatives such as reducing and recycling waste, energy saving, water saving, green transport and healthier eating to obtain green flags with the An Taisce Green Schools project (www.antaisce.org). Drogheda is a proactive town moving towards sustainable development.

Gluaiseacht has also made Green Guides for Limerick City, Naas, Ennis, Waterford city and Portlaoise. You can find more guides at www.greenguide.ie, and a Dublin greenmap at www.sustainable.ie.
