Local Agenda 21 (linked with the Local Environmental Partnership Fund) is a global programme which encourages people to work in partnership to raise awareness in their local community and to take action on sustainable development issues. It was born out of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), (Rio Earth Summit), at Rio de Janeiro in 1992. 179 countries, including Ireland, gave their commitment to an agenda for change in the 21st Century. It is recognition of the need for local action and involvement to help solve these global problems.
