'Stony sea-board. Far and foreign
Stony hills poured over space' ~ Betjeman
Clare has a long history of environmental activism, from heritage protection to waste. One of the most well-known protest campaigns (early 1990s), was about Mullaghmore, a spectacular mountain of stony rings in the centre of the Burren area.
TThe rings were formed by tectonic forces which folded under the pressure.
The controversy was over the siting of an interpretative centre at the base of Mullaghmore and it forced changes to the OPW and planning laws.
It is still ongoing as the State is continuing with their claim for expenses from the seven Burren Action Group members who took the legal challenge.
Other notable environmental protests in Clare have been the waste issues in Inagh, and over the golf course development in Doonbeg.
