"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot"
~ Joni Mitchell
The Chaos of commuting
Since the Celtic tiger began, traffic
jams are on the rise in Ennis,
which are disproportionate to the
city’s size. Solving our traffic
dilemma is a pressing issue.
In November 2004, the Government announced record infrastructure investment in rail, road and bus transport in the year ahead of €2.119billon. Of this amount, €1.319 billion will be spent on the National Roads Programme, with €686 million to be spent on public transport; twice as much to be spent on roads, than on sustainable transport.
Ireland's motorway building programme has had a fair share of critics. Controversies like the Glen of the Downs, Carrickmines, Tara and the M3 have led to huge construction delays as well as questioning our extreme car dependent culture.
Waterford has its own road controversy
over the viking settlement
at Woodstown when the N25
was being built. The digs at the
site have uncovered a wealth of
archaelogical objects including
Byzantium coins and viking
weapons.
