Goddess's of the Mabinogion | ||||||
The Mabinogian is a theme that holds a special significance for an artist whose homeland is shared with the echoes of Celtic lovers Pwyll and Rhiannon. These ancient folk tales tell the story of the mythical people of Cymru or Wales. As a child I would sit wide-eyed and in complete awe whilst my grandmother read to me of them. Arianrhod I especially loved. Her associations with the moon, and her castle hidden amongst the constellation of Caer Sidi set a seven-year-olds imagination on fire. Midnight palaces full of stars are the ingredients of dreams and can be very powerful, especially to one so young and impressionable. Rhiannon also was a particular influence. I had always known she was special and when I first heard Stevie Nicks beautiful ballad about her, I was so pleased that someone on the other side of the world thought so too.
The tale of Branwen is beautiful and sad. The women of the ancient tales were all such strong characters, having to endure many trials in the name of love. I think of all, Branwens struck me as the most poignant. As with the 'Images of Albion,' these too are early designs and ones, which I would dearly love to illustrate again. Having grown so much during the years since these were drawn, it would be wonderful to see how I would portray each character now . . . so watch this space . . . |
