I.Q. Writing Technique

Introduction

The I.Q. investigative and interactive questioning technique of writing has been designed to help you with your writing problems.  The information and instructions contained in this document have been compiled into an easy to read and understand format and the charts have been designed to help you visualise all the ingredients of writing and to inspire you to commence on a new and exciting approach to writing.

Writing is a systematic recording of a creative thought process through which an objective in relation to a particular subject matter is achieved using a series of investigative and interactive questioning steps.

You cannot write about a general requirement.  This must be refined to create a specific requirement in terms of a subject matter and an objective.

The IQ Writing Technique

A.  Subject Matter

The subject matter must be specified clearly as fiction, a fact, an event, an object, a problem, a need, an action, a concept, an opportunity etc.

B.  Objective
The objective to be achieved in relation to the subject matter must be specified precisely.  Your objective could be to write an essay or report, describe a detail, present the facts, analyse a situation, solve a problem, make a decision, create a plan, review progress, define benefits, measure outcome etc.
To achieve the objective in relation to the subject matter a series of investigative and interactive questioning steps must be undertaken.

C.  Investigative Steps
In the investigative steps the elements of the subject matter must be defined and described in detail.  Defining the elements can be achieved by asking questions, e.g. what ? where ? when ? who ? how ? and typical descriptions can include specification, operation, function, dependence, resources required, costs etc.

D.  Interactive Steps

In the interactive steps your skill will be brought to bear on the subject matter and on the objective to be achieved by the use of a provocative series of questioning techniques.  These questions will lead you through the analysis, options and decisions steps of writing and hence to the action stage as follows:

Analysis:      Why that?, why there?, why then?, why him/her, why that way?

Options:        What else?, where else?, when else?, who else?, how else?

Decisions:    What should?, where should?, when should?, who should?, how
                        should?

Action:          To initiate and sustain action an implementation process must
                        be defined.
