Spike Island
In 1846 Spike Island was the location of a British garrison that guarded
the entrance to Cork Harbour. It was here that John Mitchell, patriot, poet
and writer was held in 1848 and where he wrotehis classic "Jail Journal"
before being transported to Australia.
