April 4, 2001 wasn't a night to remember for North West, long-time champions of the Donegal Snooker League. With two games to go in the current campaign, the Letterkenny men needed only a draw in Donegal Town to ensure that the League Trophy would remain on John Doherty's well-filled honours shelf. CYMS of Letterkenny needed Donegal to do them a big favour and the southerners obliged in a fantastic night's entertainment watched by a goodly gallery. Oliver Plunkett will hope that his upcoming wedding will go as well as did his two frames with Gerry McKeever. The Donegal man potted fluently and accurately to take both frames. Tom Plunkett then outlasted Gerry McCloskey in a titanic battle littered with poor shots and nervy cueing. North West were in trouble although Joe Devine was potting well and a break of 49 in the first frame of his match with Michael Neary boded well. But the ace golfer is not yet a spent force on the green baize and he responded magnificently to level the match and set up a thrilling final frame. Joe started the better of the two but Michael rallied and in a shot which summed up North West's luck on the night, Michael fluked the pink to complete a remarkable comeback. Three down and with only pride to play for, the ever-consistent Pat Bonnar triumphed two-one over Charles Murphy in the final match of the night. It was a famous victory for the Donegal club and set the locals wondering about what might have been had Donegal not drawn so many matches during the campaign. With only one defeat to their name, Donegal will be hoping to build on this next season.

Donegal Town continued their recent policy of blooding their up and coming young players in their previous Donegal League match away to Ramelton B. The two youngsters Ciaran O'Reilly and Brian Heeney didn't disappoint with Brian achieving a great two nil win playing exciting snooker and Ciaran taking the experienced Peter Friel to three frames before succumbing. Indeed, had Ciaran won a respotted black in the second frame, he would have won the match. Tom Plunkett and Paul Thomas showed that the old guard still have something to offer by winning their matches and ensuring three points for Donegal.

Donegal's miserable Derry League form continued when the boys were eliminated from the Premier Cup by North West B in Donegal Town. Charlie Murphy, Tom Plunkett and Oliver Plunkett all drew their matches but they lost the tie on a count-back of points scored in frames.

Donegal Town were hammered 4-0 at home by a strong North West outfit in the final Donegal Junior League match. Michael O'Hara won 2-0 against Ciaran O'Reilly, Paul McCauley defeated Nicholas Culloo 2-1, Richard Gerrity beat Conor Browne 2-0 and Johnny Connors won the overall Player of the Year title by defeating Niall Gillespie in two close frames. Congratulations to the Letterkenny men and hopefully next year's league campaign will see a better showing from the Donegal lads. Donegal finish third of four teams with a record of two wins, two draws and two defeats.

Three pairs have qualified for the semi-finals of the Pool Pairs Championship. Gary and Ernie Spencer will play the winners of Tom /Oliver Plunkett versus Shane Faulkner and Justin Thomas. The other semi-final sees Damien Hanna and Michael Gallagher face Terry Mullin and Paul Cannon. The last of the junior competitors were beaten by Terry and Paul in the quarter-final. Keith Mulhern and Cathal Mulhern did extremely well to reach this stage at such a tender age. Well done lads!

Senior Members are urged to play their matches in the Canon McMullin Cup as soon as possible. Juniors should do likewise in the Hanna Hats Cup. Among those through to the next round are Ann McFadden who defeated promising youngster Keelan O'Neill and Ciaran Boyle who took the scalp of top player Nicholas Culloo.
