Donegal Town's hopes of winning the Lyric Donegal League were surely dashed when they lost three one to leaders North West A in Letterkenny (13.12.2000). They now lie seven points adrift of the champions and although the match was tight, the better team won on the night. Tom Plunkett lost his first frame in the league to date but despite playing like a novice, he fought back to defeat an out-of-sorts Joe Devine. North West would not lose another frame. Their three remaining players have been around as long as anyone can remember and they can still pack a punch. Bernard McGuinness was clinical in defeating Michael Neary, Gerry McCluskey came back from the dead to snatch victory from Terry Mullin and Gerry McKeever had a break of 39 en route to a topsy-turvy win over Oliver Plunkett. The tea was sweet afterwards as North West reflected on a record of nine straight wins with only one match to go until the half-way point is reached.
Donegal drew 3-3 with G.P.O. in Derry (11.12.2000). Tom Plunkett defeated Brian McCourt 2-0, Michael Neary (with the aid of a 31 break) drew 1-1 with JP Shiels while Terry Mullin was unfortunate to meet Seamus Cusack in devastating form.
The junior team drew its second county match with Twin Towns (9.12.2000). The winners were Luke McGee and Conor Browne, who has a 100% record to date. Donegal lie third in a four team group.
Tom Plunkett faces Michael Neary and Sean Boyle faces Alan Ramsay in the semi-finals of the Christmas Hamper following the latest series of matches. Tom had to battle hard to defeat James McAllister, while Alan defeated Kieran Temple in a most enjoyable encounter. Sean Boyle potted the pink in the third frame to defeat Greg McHugh in his quarter-final. The final will take place on Friday 22nd starting at 7.30 p.m.
Ciaran O'Reilly reached the final of the junior hamper by defeating Fergal Browne who had earlier beaten his older brother Conor. The other finalist has yet to emerge. The final will take place at 7 p.m. sharp on Friday 22nd.
The Inter Firms pool competition is at the semi-final stage. Young guns Chelsea face Baby Joe's following their tight victory over the National B. Baby Joe's accounted for the National's A side. The other semi saw the Coach House A defeat the Castle Bar. Alan Ramsay's men took a three one lead in the singles and one doubles win sufficed to send the Coach House to its first final.
The Committee wishes all its members, patrons and sponsors a merry Christmas and happy snookering in 2001.
Finally, the club wishes to commiserate with former caretaker Alfie Simms on the death of his mum and with Keith Anderson on the death of his dad.
