Lyric Donegal League - Week 17
This week's results have probably finalised the finishing positions of the top three teams with five weeks still to go.
CYMS of Letterkenny played twice during the week and they had a mixed bag in terms of results. They clinically defeated Ramelton A 4-0 in Ramelton without the loss of a frame. Phelim McClafferty had a break of 48 in his victory and the other winners were Aidan Devenney, Chris Gibbons and Paddy McGroarty. Their second match was at home to North West B and the visitors did their A team a major favour by drawing two each. Phelim McClafferty was again in grat form and he compiled a break of 71 en route to a two-nil win over Johnny Connors. Brian McAleer levelled matters for North West by defeating Paddy McGroarty two nil. Michael O'Hara defeated Anthony Duffy 2-1 to give the visitors the lead but it was short-lived as Chris Gibbons dug deep to edge past Paul Doherty 2-1.
North West capitalised by defeating Ramelton A 3-1 in Letterkenny. Bernard McGuinness, Johnny Whyte and Gerry McKeever won 2-0 with Paul Murray replying for Ramelton, defeating Gerry McCloskey in two frames. North West are now a point ahead of CYMS with a game in hand.
Third placed Donegal came unstuck once again against Twin Towns A. The key match saw Jack McGranaghan gain revenge for his defeat earlier in the season in Donegal Town. He easily defeated his then conqueror Tom Plunkett 2-0. Charlie Murphy lifted Donegal spirits by defeating up-and-coming youngster Jason Browne 2-1 and Paul Thomas had the same scoreline in his match with a plucky Daniel O'Brien. Star of the night was young Simon Connolly who showed great maturity in defeating Michael Neary 2-0 to earn a draw for Twin Towns.
Convoy B enjoyed a solid 4-0 win away to Ramelton B. Chris Devenney, Paul Lynch, Andy Doherty and Gavin Toner all won 2-0 in their best result of the season.
The final fixture saw Convoy A draw with Twin Towns B at home. Gavin Snodgrass and Ronan Gallagher won for the visitors with Willie Breen and Justin Lynch levelling things for the home team. This result was later amended to a 3-1 win for Convoy A due to an ineligible player on the away side.
Chris Gibbons still leads the Player of the Year ladder with one win more than Phelim McClafferty. Gerry McKeever lies a further win behind on 13 wins with Tom Plunkett in fourth on 12.
