Winners in the recent fundraising draw were as follows...1st Angela McGroary, AIB Donegal; 2nd Eddie Davenport; 3rd Tara Friel, AVS; 4th Bobby Love, Copany; 5th Joe Craig, Donegal; and 6th Edward Dunnion, Donegal. The club thanks all that supported the draw and congratulates the lucky winners.

Donegal began 2001 in fine style with a resounding 4-2 victory away to Roesiders of Limavady in the Derry League. Michael Neary drew one apiece with Noel McDermott and Oliver Plunkett replicated this by drawing with Sean McCann. Tom Plunkett ensured a happy return to Donegal by taking both frames off Adrian Pearson. The result leaves Donegal in fourth place but fifth placed CYMS lie just five points behind with two games in hand. The top four will contest the play-offs.

In a key top-of-the-table clash, Donegal battled to a 2-2 draw away to second-placed CYMS in the Donegal League. Michael Neary's good form continued with a great comeback against young Anthony Duffy. Trailing by 28 with three reds left in the final frame, Michael potted and snookered his way to a respotted black and kept his nerve to win a fine match. Oliver Plunkett was up against Player of the Year leader Chris Gibbons who potted fluently in the deciding frame to edge home. Terry Mullin met an in-form Paddy McGroarty who compiled a 31 break en route to a two-nil win. Tom Plunkett ensured a draw for Donegal by coming from behind to beat old rival Phelim McClafferty two one.

The draws have been made for the Sean McCafferty Cup for seniors (holder Damien Hanna) and the Coulter Cup sponsored by Davy Crawford for juniors (holder Kevin Mulhern). Details can be found on the website. The draw has also been made for the Harry Diver Cup sponsored by Barry Mulreany (holder Paddy Kelly). The draws are posted in the club. Please play your matches promptly as we have four competitions running simultaneously in the club and backlogs create major headaches! The club is currently collecting entries for the Pool Pairs Cup won in 1999and 2000 by the Plunkett brothers. All entries to John McGlanaghey please.

Donegal won their third Junior League match three one versus Convoy. Brian Heeney, Aidan McFadden and Mark Mulhern all won two nil but Conor Browne was the victim of a great comeback by Seamus Sweeney in the final match.

The club is fifty years in its current location and Tom Plunkett is researching its past with a view to writing a booklet to mark the occasion. It would also be published on the club's website. He is in the process of interviewing both current and former members with a view to gleaning as much information as he can about the history of snooker and billiards in the town. They have been a mine of information! He still needs lots of help with the following:

  1. Photos in the club are non-existent prior to 1981 so he would love to be able to copy any photos which anyone may have of Water Street pre or post 1951; the Shamrock Hotel; former caretakers such as Alec Buchanan, Johnny McHugh, Tim McMullin, Jack McMahon and James Murphy; former committee members; Paddy More Doherty and his wife Marian; Tommy O'Donnell who looked after the tables for years; photos of table-tennis or badminton teams who played in the clubrooms; the old Market-House at Milltown, a former venue in the forties/fifties; a photo of Canon McMullin and Fr. Deeney; a photo of George T Gallagher, the contractor in 1951; any players of billiards, skittles, golf (the billiard game!) or snooker from days gone by such as Capt. Andrews, Phil Timony, Guard John McGettigan, "G" Doherty, Peter Meehan, etc. I have over 700 names on the club member database so I need as many photos as possible. The more the merrier! All photos would be returned once copied.
  2. He needs information about a John McNulty who signed his name on the old Shamrock Hotel table in 1906 and 1907.
  3. Hugh Gildea, a spirit dealer owned a billiard room on the Diamond in 1894 (whereabouts unknown). He lived on Main St. in the 1850s/60s. Any information on him would be great.
  4. Information on snooker in Donegal Town prior to 1940 is scanty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone with anecdotes, documentation, winners trophies/prizes from years gone by, etc. can contact Tom at the club, or by writing to him at Breifne, Clareden Drive, Donegal Town.
