Normal snooker activity resumed following the Foot and Mouth outbreak which brought county snooker to a standstill.
Donegal Town were hammered 4-0 at home by a strong North West outfit in the final Donegal Junior League match. Michael O'Hara won 2-0 against Ciaran O'Reilly, Paul McCauley defeated Nicholas Culloo 2-1, Richard Gerrity beat Conor Browne 2-0 and Johnny Connors won the overall Player of the Year title by defeating Niall Gillespie in two close frames. Congratulations to the Letterkenny men and hopefully next year's league campaign will see a better showing from the Donegal lads. Donegal finish third of four teams with a record of two wins, two draws and two defeats.
Donegal Town's latest senior county match ended in a two-all draw with Twin Towns B. The two debutants on the home team, Nicholas Culloo and Gary Spencer did well but just failed to win their matches against Mark Bell and Michael Chambers respectively. Tom Plunkett and Paul Thomas made certain of at least a draw by winning their tussles two nil. Donegal remain in third position.
13-year old Nicholas Culloo won the Coulter Cup sponsored by David Crawford and John McGlanaghey and presented by Peter Coulter. The club is indebted to David for offering to sponsor the prizes. Nicholas defeated James O'Shea 4-1 in a high quality pool final. James never gave up and he didn't let himself down in what was his first club final. This was his third winner's trophy of the season following his victories in the Paddy Kelly Cup (snooker) and the Inter-Firms Pool Shield. He is also the present holder of the Jim Conaghan Cup. Nicholas made a fine speech at the presentation ceremony, something he has had a lot of practice at of late. The beaten semi-finalists were Patrick O'Donnell and Ciaran O'Reilly. Nicholas was later rewarded with a league debut on the senior team, a great honour for one so young. He and Ciarán O'Reilly are dominating junior competitions at present and they have undoubtedly raised the junior game to a new level.
Michael Breslin won the 15th Sean McCafferty Cup for the second time in three years by defeating David Crawford 3-2 in a pulsating final witnessed by a huge gallery.
Michael got off to a great start knocking in breaks of 21 and 17 to easily take the opener. David fought back in frame two, responding to Michael's break of 17 with one of his own to level the match. Frame three was perhaps the pivotal one of the final for David had a great opportunity to pot a makeable blue, which would have put him in a commanding position in the frame. He missed and Michael went on to snatch the frame. David wasn't finished yet and he potted Michael off the table in double-quick time to go 50 points ahead. Needing snookers, Michael achieved six of them! He couldn't get the seventh and David crawled over the finishing line. The final frame was scrappy with both players playing nervy shots but Michael's greater experience in finals told in the end and he ran out a comfortable winner.
Michael is also the current holder of the Canon McMullin Cup, so he is the Nicholas Culloo of the senior section! Sean was on hand to present the cup to Michael and the victor was very gracious in praising his feisty opponent.
The entry sheet for the Canon McMullin Cup is on the notice-board. The draw will take place on April 2.
