The Derry League will resume on Monday the 9th of October with a home match against North West A. Donegal have also been grouped with CYMS A, GPO, George's Bar, Oak Grove B, Pot Black, Roesiders and Maxibreak A. Four teams will qualify from this group for the quarter-final stage.

The Donegal League held their AGM recently and there were changes in the format of the league. This season will see a switch to four-man teams with teams getting three points for a win, one point for a draw and nothing for losing. An individual ranking list will also be compiled based on performances in the league and the winner will receive the Player of the Year trophy . Mick DeWard is the new Chairman; Tom Plunkett is the Secretary/PRO while Darren Ponsonby remains the Treasurer. Clubs which have submitted teams include Donegal, North West A & B, CYMS, Killea, Ramelton A & B, Convoy A & B and Twin Towns A & B. North West A are the reigning champions.

The John Griffin Cup has reached the last 16 stage and several of the so-called 'big guns' are out. Holder Tom Plunkett was unceremoniously dumped by Terry Mullin while Shane Faulkner became Martin Mulhern's latest high profile victim. Paddy Kelly is quietly sliding through the rounds while Charlie Murphy is back to his best. Players are encouraged to play their matches as soon as possible. The draw is on the website.

The Paddy Kelly Cup is the junior club championship and several players have reached the latter stages, among them Kevin Haughey, Fergal Browne, Conor Browne, Nicholas Culloo, Mark Mulhern, Kevin Cassidy, Paul Fahy and Ciaran O'Reilly. More results can be found on the website.

Donegal Town Snooker Club invites snooker, golf (the billiard game!!) or pool players to become new members for season 2000/20001. The club, based in Water Street, is the only one involved in competitive snooker between Sligo and Ballybofey and we currently have members from as far afield as Killybegs and Ballyshannon. There are four snooker tables and two pool tables in the venue and we currently have 78 seniors and 119 juniors. The club competes in both the Derry and Donegal Leagues and last season we finished second in Donegal and reached the quarter-finals in Derry. We are a progressive non-profit club that ploughs back its surplus into the facility.

The current membership fee is twenty pounds for seniors and two for juniors. The club runs twelve competitions over the season and games are 60p for seniors and 40p for juniors. Tea or coffee is free and the opening hours are from 7.30pm to 11.30pm. More information on the club can be found on the club's website at:

Finally...we are fifty years in our present location and to mark this anniversary Tom Plunkett is compiling a history of snooker in Donegal Town. He has interviewed members from the fifties on and he is eager to talk to anyone who has knowledge of the history of snooker in the town. Photos are in scarce supply and he would delighted if he were able to copy any photos of former players, caretakers, openings or presentations. He is eager to see old notebooks or documentation which would show the names of members, the cost of snooker, etc.

The earliest date we have for snooker in Donegal Town is 1897 when a man named Hugh Gildea owned a billiard room, probably on the Diamond. There was snooker in what is now Club N (Paddy More's) from the early part of the century until 1947 when the present club was formed. It stayed three years in Cassidy's Store until the present building was constructed.

If this social history isn't written, it will be lost forever. If you have a relation who had a role in the club or knows about Hugh Gildea or Paddy More's, please contact Tom at 21312 or through the club. We know very little about Hugh, Paddy More's, the origin of tables or former winners of both junior and senior competitions and we need assistance!
