January is always a make-or-break month in the league and so it proved for Donegal in both the Derry and Donegal competitions. The club won only one match in the former, defeating CYMS B four two in Letterkenny. Maxibreak won four two in Derry while CYMS B grabbed a draw in the return fixture in Donegal. With Gransha expelled for failing to fulfil fixtures, Donegal had no further games and so have to wait until the league proper is completed before discovering who the club will face in the quarterfinal.
In the county league Donegal won three two against Convoy A and were handed a five point win when Northwest B failed to show for their match. On the debit side Northwest A and Killea each dished out a four one hammering to the lads in successive away fixtures. Tom Plunkett was the sole victor in Letterkenny while Paul Thomas preserved some dignity by winning in Killea. The club's last one hundred per cent record went when Tom lost two one to Shane Grant. The club is currently second in the division, a point ahead of Killea with Ramelton B in close pursuit. Northwest A are out of sight at the top illustrating once again the strength in depth of the Letterkenny outfit, who are to be congratulated on winning the Connacht Club Championship held recently in Ballina.
In internal competitions Charles Murphy took over as club number one for a time by defeating Tom Plunkett who had held the top spot since August. To add to Tom's discomfort, Martin Mulhern also took his scalp to leave the Glebe man in pole position at the start of February. Terry Mullin was a black away from eliminating the faltering ex-number one in the Sean McCafferty Cup but couldn’t cross the winning line. Elsewhere, Francis Cassidy defeated both Patsy McNulty and Michael Neary in two pulsating clashes, while last year's winner Michael Breslin was dethroned by Damien Hanna. Shane Faulkner finally overcame his Jacky McMullin hoodoo and Davy Crawford knocked out Martin Mulhern.
In the Harry Diver Cup sponsored by Barry Mulreany, Jim Kenny won a tight match with Michael Hunt on the final pink. Competitors should endeavour to play their matches as soon as possible. The draw is in the clubrooms.
The Coulter Cup was an extremely successful competition with twenty-six junior beginners entering. The finalists are Mark B. Gallagher and Kevin Mulhern. The beaten semi-finalists were David Giblin and Paul Fahy. The speed with which the tournament was played shows the enthusiasm of these young players. The club recently recruited its eightieth junior member and these boys and girls will hopefully be the lifeblood of the club in the years ahead.
The club sympathises with Daithi McGonigle and his Dad on the death of Daithi's mum. Her kindness, courage and fortitude will long be remembered.
Finally, the club members congratulate Linda and Gregory McHugh on the birth of their baby girl. Time to take out family membership Greg!
