H. R. Giger is most famously noted for his revolutionary work on the film "Alien" for which he achieved oscar recognition in the form of "Best Achievement in Visual Effects". He is regarded as one of the world's foremost artists in Fantastic Realism, creating visions of Biomechanical Surrealism. He was born in 1940 in Chur, a village in Switzerland. He studied architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich.

Giger's book "Necronomicon" (1977) served as a visual inspiration for Ridley Scott's "Alien", landing Giger his first film project. Giger's other film works include " Poltergeist II", "Alien3" and "Species". To date, over 20 books have been written about his artwork. Giger also works in sculpture. In 1992 he created the Giger Bar in Chur (pictured above), which embodies his ideas and style. The Museum of H. R. Giger is found in Gruyères, Switzerland. It contains Giger's paintings, sculptures, furniture and film designs. |
He has also designed album covers (Blondie) and has met with Salvador Dali, who offered Giger further insight into his own work. He currently lives and works in Zurich. |
