Vincent van Gogh is regarded as the pioneer of 20th century art but more so as the best loved painter in the history of art.  He was born in 1853 in Groot Zundert near Breda.  Before he became an artist, van Gogh tried numerous professions including a teacher, a lay preacher and a bookseller.  He lived a solitary life while Theo, his devoted brother and only true friend, gave him support of every kind.

Camille Pissaro, the famous Impressionist, once quoted “This man will either go mad or outpace us all”.  Van Gogh sought desperately for the recognition his work deserved but this only fuelled his self destructive personality.  In 1890, his tragic life ended with a self inflicted gun shot.

Ironically his art prices have since broken every record.  In the ten years between 1881-1890, almost 900 paintings were produced by van Gogh.  Many of them masterpieces.
