B52! WHERE ARE YOU?

Dear Sir,
Having read you ‘Weekly’ for the past year with the greatest of enjoyment I just can’t forego a week without it, reading about Douglas, past and present. One of my favourite articles, I have to say, is the report on Road Bowling, one of Cork’s best acknowledged traditions, but with great disappointment I have not seen any such column for the past number of weeks. Where is your B52 reporter? Is he on another mission overseas with the UN armed forces or what? Bring him back home, I for one miss the humour of the 28 ounce.

MERRY MEMORIES, PLEASE!

Dear Michael,
Firstly, many thanks for sending on the copies of “Douglas Weekly”. Secondly, on the subject of the Pipers, as you know I’m researching the history of the business and would like to collect memories or interesting anecdotes to do with The Merries. For example, how many people found their future partner through a meeting at The Merries? Do any of your readers recall how The Merries looked in the old days of Bill Piper, or have photographs of the rides or stalls? Does anyone remember some of the “characters” who worked some of the machines or rides? What music was played? What was the atmosphere like in the Merryfield? Anything of interest would be welcomed.
