DOUGLAS HALL HONOURS BRENDAN
Dear Douglas Weekly,
Just a short note of thanks to Brendan Heffernan for the
wonderful welcome he gave me and the rest of the Swanton family
on our recent visit to St. Columbas Hall for the
presentation of the Brendan Swanton Memorial Trophy. We were all
taken by the value of friendship and respect your club members
had for Brendan. On his original letter seeking permission to
name the trophy in Brendans name he stated Brendan was a
valued friend to the club, on the day of the presentation the
club members friendship towards Brendan was very evident.
Even though Brendan was not there in body, he was actually there
in spirit and would have been very proud of the honour and esteem
all present showed for him. We wish to express our sincere thanks
to the committee and members of St. Columbas Hall Road
Bowling Club for the beautiful was they have honoured Brendan.
Their efforts show us that Brendan was a very special person and
will not be easily forgotten.
We thank everyone for their kindness.
Yours sincerely,
Noreen, Nicholas, Aiden, Finbarr and Mary Swanton
BOAT CLUB MEMORIES
Calling all guys and dolls who
graduated from Cork Boat Club, Blackrock in the
60s.
Sunday nights when we jived and fox-trotted to bands like the
late Johnny Byrne with Brendan OBrien in his ranks. The
marvellous Dukes featuring Ted OMahony, Arthur Butler and
the wonderful voice of the late Paddy Walsh. Music makers with
Con McGowen, Jimmy Mintern plus many more talented entertainers.
Close your eyes and recall Barmy Summer Nights and Ladies Bash
(invitation), Jim Reeves Hell Have to Go,
Danny Williams Moon River, Visions of
Love, by Cliff Richard. Couples in close embrace
hands all round and things were serious.
Us guys Cock of the wall in snazzy suits and pointed
shoes. Every girl a lasher in dresses with umpteen
underskirts. Not a jumper or jeans in sight. The world our
oyster. Carefree wonderful days.
Im sure if a supper dance, or better still, a dinner dance
was organised for the classes of the 60s it
would be a respounding success.
Neil ODonoghue,
Douglas.
THANK YOU DOUGLAS WEEKLY
Dear Michael,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff
at Douglas Weekly for all your help with our recent centre page
spread. The response has been phenomenal and business is booming.
Keep up the good work and may your paper go from strength to
strength. Also, would you be kind enough to mention a very honest
lady from Carrigaline who found a purse belonging to one of our
chefs and handed it in to the restaurant. Claire was absolutely
thrilled and never got a chance to thank the lady.
Yours sincerely,
Noreen Lynch,

CORK LIFESAVING CLUB WRITES ...
Dear Mr. OHanlon,
On behalf of the Cork Lifesaving Club, I wish to express our
sincere gratitude to you for advertising on our behalf in the
Douglas Weekly.
Your help has resulted in an increase in membership, which in
turn allows us to continue training people on a voluntary basis
to become lifesavers/lifeguards.
Many thanks for keeping our club in your thoughts..
Yours faithfully,
Ann OHalloran,
Cork Life Saving Club, Gus Healy Pool, Douglas
